Hello guys,
This is your first task. I would like you to see this video and post a short comment. Your comment could include one of the following options:
a. A short reflection about the phase in which you find yourself as a teacher
b. An opinion about the theory of the 3 phases
c. A description of the advantages/disadvantages of one of the phases
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY THE VIDEO
Claudia,
ReplyDeleteIt was a pleasure to be your student when I took the TEFL course last year.
I am pretty sure your current students will enjoy and learn a lot from your classes.
A big hug to everyone.
The Poet !
Great video
ReplyDeleteI have only used phases 1 and 2 but I would like to try the new phase because it is student centered, and the fact that students can produce, publish and review their product makes this type of teaching an excellent tool to incorporate the 3 “twenty first century skills” they should achieve (communication, collaboration, and creation).
ReplyDeletealexander, thanks for your comment.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say the 3 phase is student-centered. It gives students opportunities to produce and create.
I like phase 3. I think it gives studnets a closer view to a nowadays real-life situation, and the opportunity to be part of it. They are not only expected to be an audience but also doers, not just followers but also creators.
ReplyDeleteI like this Phase 3 becuase is based on student centered which involves and engage students to produce their own work. This phase helps students to move toward becoming producers of information and creators of information, not only to be consumers of information like phase 1 for example Power Point Presentations.
ReplyDeleteI think all phases are important because the teacher has the opportunity to know and learn about new tools that can be presented to students as other sources to learn or practice and/or to present their products. When using this kind of tools in our classes we have to be careful because sometimes students know even more about this than teachers. On the other hand, I agree with all the ones who have said that phase 3 is more student-centered than the other ones, but I'd also like to highlight its use in assessment, since students have the opportunity to see what they did and follow their process this might be a very useful tool to make learning more meaningful, because students are able to see what they can do and can also get feedback from the ones who have access to their products.
ReplyDeleteI like what Sandra added about using phase 3 not only to promote production by the students but also as a way for students to get feedback. And this feedback can come not only from the teacher but from their peers.
ReplyDeleteI like phase 2 because it gives students the opportunity to find out more information, and maybe even things that they didnt learn from class, or something that they may have missed. However a disadvantage is that the internet may distract some students, or discourage a student from learning if they are computer illiterate.
ReplyDelete-Vanessa
My comment is about everything i just heard.
ReplyDeletewhen i finished listening to it the first time,i tried to put myself as a teacher in one of the phases and it wasn't possible!
I think i've participated in all 3 phases as a teacher. The phase i use the most would be #1 as #1 is defined as "Any presentation that captures sts. attention with light!".
Taking sts. to the internet, showing them a top notch video or simply watching a movie would classify in this phase.
I would also like to comment on phase # 2!
The first thing that caught my attention in P.2 was "Text books are replaced with electronic forms of information"
I don't think that electronic forms of info. can ever replace a book. They serve as excellent Extra tools but not as the no. 1 source for a classroom.
DAMN!i don't remember writing so much in my life!
And i still got more if you'd like!!!
Hi, guys! i think this is an interesting theory. especially the way the presenter describes the process on how thechnology has taken place in class. It made me reflect on what and how much colombo teachers use this tool in class. I might say that I could be in a transition from phase one to two. However, i know i have to learn a lot on how to use this tool I am a teacher who likes and enjoys doing projects and activities out of the classroom with my ss. we know that technology agrees pretty well with this generation.
ReplyDeleteI like the ideaof what phase 3 of this thoery describes. I think it is very interesting and challenging for teachers and ss. Not only having a final product but also publishing this to others who could learn, know and even more being inspired by others ideas, it would be in favor of what the educational theorist Ivan Illich suggests “LEARNING WEB” . Cool!
Besides this, presenting the idea of giving the chance to ss of evaluating what they do is pretty nice and useful. this will encourage ss to be more awere of what they do and how to improve.
What 3 phases are you talking about?
ReplyDeletePhase 3 is the same as phase 2 but with something more productive for students to do.
I only see phases 1 and 2 (having more or less technology for teachers and students). So called "phase 3" is not a phase it's a description of connected skills you can implement either in phase 0 (pencil and paper)phase 1(computer for teacher) or phase 2(computers and internet for teacher and students).
The author makes it look as if you can't develop the 3 skills he mentioned unless both teachers and students have access to information technology. I simply don't agree.
1. People who didn't have access to information technology have developed these skills in the past. (Check out the countless books made before the 60's and 70's)
2. I have seen classes in which so called "phase 3" (implementation of skills) is achieved without the use of computers.
While I agree with the descriptions provided by the author I would advice rethinking the idea of the phases as it is misleading. He should focus on how having both teacher and students use information technology can improve and facilitate development of skills such as communication, collaboration and production.
I think that to implement techonology in the classes is great and give the opportunity to students to use their imagination, information and produce new things is great for any kind of learning, also even that i am not in phase 3 yet i had used other two phases as a student and as a teacher and it is true ,in the two first ones the teacher is a tool for the students but in the last one they use their creativity to produce and the teacher will just monitor what they did or are doing, not only will make the student to produce more also they will have new positive thing to think in come to class and be active in his or her learning process
ReplyDeleteI have always conidered myself to be a person that follows technology and I try to take it to my class. in my opinion students should make public their creations. the world doesn't stop and we should keep moving at its rhythm. some people say that is not necesary to use technology in class but if we want to help students get by i the world tecnology is the best tool out there.
ReplyDeleteWow! I'm really happy to see how much you guys have been participating in this discussion.
ReplyDeleteI think Alex is totally right when he says that there can be, and actually there should be production in every language class, with or without the use of Information Communication Technology. However, as all of you have pointed out, why not using tools most of our students are so familiar with. Isn't it at the end one of every teacher's goals, connecting languange learning with students' real life?

I think that all 3 phases are good teaching methods. I like phase 2 the best because it gives the chance for the students to use computers in class and to do research on the computer in class. I don't like the thought that it totally replaces textbooks, I think that both should be used but computers are a good research tool. Phase 3 is good because it gives the students a chance to publish their work and put teaching/learning in the 21st century.
I´m a phase 1 teacher. I guess because I´m very old fashion...
ReplyDeleteor because I don´t know much about today´s technology :)
I would like to learn more about technology
to implement phase 2 and 3 in my classes.
I think it would be more fun for students.
Well, I think many teachers would be thrilled to go to the third phase of educational technology in their teaching, but need a hand getting there. A district needs to provide assistance for the teachers in planning and constructing their early web 2.0 projects. Most districts now have someone to help fix a computer when it goes down, but I wonder how many districts have personnel available to coach teachers through their first few implementations of this type of plan. In these days of budget cuts, even a web 2.0 peer mentoring system could prove valuable.
ReplyDeleteImportant idea Diana M.
ReplyDeleteTeachers need training on how to use the modern technological tools available. We need to be up to date otherwise we won't be able to meet our students demands.
The funny thing is that these 3 phases have happened within the traditional classroom as well.
ReplyDeletePhase 1: Chalk and talk
Phase 2: Student reads textbooks and perhaps responds to them using traditional short answer questions
Phase 3: Students produce their own work (ie poster, presentation, model, etc).
Ideally, you would want all teachers to reach phase 3 in traditional teaching within the classroom. The same as for technology.
"Using technology has the added bonus of communication with a mass audience if desired. There is nothing inherently "technological" about 21st Century Skills. Communication, Collaboration, and Creation can happen without any technology. But the use of technology facilitates it on a global level."

Alexander thanks for your comment- very appropriate.
ReplyDeleteI like to use technology,It changes the environment, some students can show more abilities, they can get information of whatever they want to talk about and many more advantages. but I think that learning a language is all about the learners production. Sometimes students enjoy simple activities such as asking questions to each other and writing in their notebooks rather than using a computer for (sometimes) really difficult or "over elaborated" activities. So, my conclusion is: using computers and technology helps to change the environment and the type of activity, but there`s nothing like students creating questions, and using them to interview other people, or presentations with the information the can handle easily.
ReplyDeleteGreat point Julio- sometimes simple activities encourage more production from the students than other elaborated type of activities.
ReplyDeleteTeachers need to use different resources to make their classes varied, motivating and engaging. Resources can range from simple pieces of paper to state of the art technology; it all depends on our students and the resources we can access in our teaching situation.
Even thought I´m not a current teacher, I believe phase 3 is the ideal. I used it in my teaching and it was great to see my students faces...They just love the rithym of technology. They are willing to try new things, creating and evolving into new solutions on class. I´ll hope that institutions, schools, universities, encourage us, as teachers into the new world´s technology.
ReplyDeleteRight now I´m developing a curriculo. Don´t know for sure somethings you guys are discussing about. But what I do know for certain is that teachers MUST be encourage too. Many institutions cut their wings in terms of production and creativity. So, it is the top´s directive institute role to capacitate teachers and motivate them to become theachers on phase 3, in order to become a member in this changing evolving world.
ReplyDeleteClaudia, I'm worried because I can't find my comment, I posted it but it seems that it disappeared....can you help me to understand what happened?
ReplyDeleteI think I am trying to work as in the second phase. According to the context I work in, I think this is the maximun step I can reach. Although it is that way, my students do a collaborative, creative work in their classroom, which lead them to communicate their ideas, in a very simple form, but they are encouraged to do it with the tools we can use. I mean that technology is a better way of teaching and learning, but in the case it can't be brought to our classroom, we as teachers must be more creative to assure an effective process.
ReplyDeleteI think the ideal of a teacher is to be able to work with the third phase, because it is very interesting to inlvolve students into new technology since more of them are eager of having their own computer to work with, and more if it is using web-pages, wikis, podcasts, chat-rooms, on-line games, tests, exercises, readings, etc. But if it is not possible, we can try to work with the second phase, inviting students to be communicative, collaborative and creative as in phase 3, even if they don't have their own computer.
